Shadforth House
This home was designed in 2023 and built in 2024 on a steep site in Shadforth with good north sun access and beautiful forest views to the south.
The brief was straightforward: a solar passive home that performs well and feels good to live in.
Living areas face north to make the most of winter sun, with a window seat that catches the light and has become the heart of the home. The building envelope was a priority from the start: 140mm wall studs allow for deeper insulation, and the builder's careful attention to airtightness means real-world comfort is likely to exceed what the energy rating alone suggests.
The steep site shaped the form. Rather than working against the slope, the design responds to it with a simple built form that sits along the contours. Timber cladding is used selectively in protected areas for warmth and texture, while more durable materials handle the exposed faces.
The clients brought their own design eye to the project, choosing finishes that give the home personality and warmth. The home runs on an off-grid solar system and rainwater tank, with no mains connections required.
